According to Japanese blog Macotakara, Apple will be getting rid of the 3.5 mm headphone jack that has been standard on iPhones and other devices for years.<br /><br />Macotakara has been accurate in the past, most recently correctly predicting that the iPhone 6 would come in a 4.7-inch version and 5.5-inch 6 Plus variant.<br /><br />According to the report's "reliable source," Apple will be replacing the included Earpods with those that plug in through the device's Lightning port. Users could also use Bluetooth wireless headphones, which have become increasingly more popular over the years. Those with older headphones will likely still be able to use them, though they would likely need an adapter that plugs into the Lightning port.<br /><br />The move is said to allow Apple to make the next iPhone even thinner, which is in line with what the company has traditionally done following an "S" year like this past one was.<br /><br />As usual with early rumors like this one, Apple has remained mum on the topic.<br /><br />The move to change the headphone jack or ports on the iPhone is also not unprecedented for Apple. The first iPhone in 2007 had a recessed headphone jack that was deeper into the phone than most devices and required an adapter to work with many headphones. This part of the iPhone was largely criticized by critics and users and Apple returned to a standard port with the iPhone 3G in 2008.<br /><br />The company switched to the now standard Lightning port in 2012 with the iPhone 5 after using the larger 30-pin connector on its iPhones, iPads and iPods. That move was initially met with a tepid response, though users and accessory makers quickly adapted.<br /><br />The headphone rumor is one of many early iPhone 7 theories. Others that have popped up in recent days include an Apple patent that would allow the phone to be used with gloves (something rival Android and Windows phones can already do) and that the company has a patent to make the phones more water resistant.<br /><br />If recent history holds true Apple will likely unveil the next iPhone in the fall of 2016, with plenty of rumors and speculation happening between now and then.<br /> <br /> <span style="font-size: xx-small;">credit:usatoday </span>

AltSchool can make education much more dynamic."<br /><br />Education reform is a subject that's been debated almost as long as there's been education. But with the mushrooming of society's technological capabilities, there's a growing push to leverage tech to radically shift the way children learn.<br /><br />Examples of tech-enabled education trends include online learning (so-called MOOCs, or massive open online courses) and tweaked collegiate experiences (San Francisco-based Minerva gathers students in the same city but their professor interactions are all online). AltSchool is a combination of technologists and educators joining forces to help teachers do their job better. They want to get away from the lectures and toward small-group education."<br /><br />AltSchool aims to keep the traditional teacher-student and student-student relationships intact while using software to allow teachers to better assess the individual learning needs of each student, says Ventilla.<br /><br />"We haven't had a new model in education for some time," he says. "Montessori schools are progressive, but that's an idea that's over 100 years old and there's no real role for technology in it. We think you can have intensely personalized learning aided by tech while preserving the benefits of one-on-one interactions."<br /><br />Ventilla says his team presently consists of 110 employees, about 45 of whom are engineers. Players can connect online, or two can play together on one TV in split-screen mode.<br />&lt;!--iframe--&gt;<br /><br />Players of different skill levels can play together cooperatively, so a player who has progressed further in the campaign can share weapons with a new player and take him to levels he can't access yet so they can play together. For instance, a player who has already played through level 5 of the game can invite a newcomer to join them at that point. "I can actually share my earnings and rewards with you so you can go in and fight with me at this later level," said Mark Lamia, head of the Activision-owned studio Treyarch that is developing the game.<br /><br />"We really just wanted to break down the barriers for people who are fortunate enough to find that time together and allow them to connect as easily as possible and enjoy the game," Lamia said.<br /><br />Since the first Call of Duty game in 2003, the franchise has surpassed $11 billion globally in sales. The first releases were based on World War II and the Vietnam War. In a nod to Edward Snowden, a massive data leak sets a new international conflict in motion.<br /><br />Directed energy air defense systems serve as umbrellas over cities to nullify air assaults so ground combat is brought to the fore. Elite Black Ops soldiers have embedded direct neural interfaces that let them communicate with combat robots and Net-connected weaponry. And other cybernetic bio-augmentations such as super-powered prosthetic limbs make soldiers more deadly.<br /><br />In the game, players can advance to gain the ability "to do things like take over drones and robotics on the battlefield," Lamia said. "It totally opens up the game."<br /><br />While the story campaign is scripted, many battle scenes can play out in untold ways depending on how players want to attack the scenario. "We wanted to create a game where players had more choice," he said. That allows the companies to better target you with relevant ads. This also means they're building a detailed profile of your likes, dislikes and online browsing habits.<br /><br />You can stop this tracking by visiting the Digital Advertising Alliance, which is the network Facebook uses, and opting out. Facebook adds fun<br /><br />When you send text messages or emails, you can include those cute little smiley faces, called emojis or emoticons. So, why can't you put emojis in Facebook posts?<br /><br />Facebook actually has more than 400 emoticons in its library if you know how to create them.<br /><br />These go way beyond just the smileys and hearts. There are emojis for professions, body parts, food, animals, flowers, weather, buildings, vehicles, holidays, directions and more. Sites like this one have assembled your emoticons options into a single page, so you can find, copy and paste the perfect image to match what you want to say.<br /><br />You can also send fun emoticons and stickers to your friends through Facebook chat or comments. In the chat or comment window, click or tap the smiley face icon. You'll see some default emoticons and stickers you can choose from. If you want to expand your options, there's a sticker store where you can download additional sticker packs. Just click the blue plus sign in the upper right corner of the sticker window.<br /><br />Bonus: Stickers are fun, but they can quickly start cluttering up your News Feed if everyone uses them. Facebook rats you out<br /><br />If you use Facebook messages, you've probably noticed the "seen at" text that appears when you open one. This tells the person who sent the message that you've looked at it. For the person sending the message, it's a nice way to know that you've seen it, and when you saw it.<br /><br />On the other hand, if you don't respond to the message right away, it looks like you're ignoring the sender. Of course you could shoot off a quick response like, "I'll get back to you later," or something similar, but should you have to?<br /><br />If you use Facebook in the Chrome browser, there's an extension called Facebook Unseen that will keep Facebook from knowing when you read a message. On Android and Apple, you can try the Facebook Messenger replacement apps Privy Chat and Unread, respectively.<br /><br />5. But investors were pleased with a healthy bump in the number of paid clicks on Google ads and comments from executives about the growing popularity of ads on the Google-owned video service YouTube, sending shares up 4% to $567.45 in after-hours trading.<br /><br />BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis says investors had braced for worse. And, he said, it helped that the Nasdaq Composite Index closed at a record high that topped its dot-com era peak.<br />&lt;!--iframe--&gt;<br /><br />"This shows that downside concerns and fears were much worse than estimates and those concerns and fears are not materializing to the degree expected," Gillis said.<br /><br />Google, which gets more than half of its revenue from overseas, got walloped by the stronger U.S. dollar. Google said first-quarter revenues would have been $795 million higher if it were not for the currency headwinds.<br /><br />Spending -- a perennial source of concern for investors -- continued to spike as the Internet giant poured money into speculative projects such as driverless cars and balloons that beam the Internet to the developing world.<br /><br />In a conference call with analysts, outgoing chief financial officer Patrick Pichette reassured analysts that Google is taking a "disciplined" approach to spending.<br /><br />SHIFT TO YOUTUBE<br /><br />He also sought to boost investor confidence by dispelling the perception that the consumer shift to mobile devices has driven down advertising prices. He told analysts that the falling prices are the result of people watching ads on Google's YouTube service, which cost less than search ads.<br /><br />Google's growth has slowed as its main search advertising business has matured. With the shift of consumers and advertising dollars to mobile, Facebook has emerged as an increasingly powerful rival quickly gaining market share in digital advertising, especially on smartphones and tablets. And both companies are competing for video advertising as marketers shift some of their television budgets to online spending.<br /><br />Last week the European Union filed a complaint against Google, alleging it abused its search dominance to promote its own shopping service. Google denies the allegations, but could face fines up to $6 billion and fundamental changes to how it conducts business.<br /><br />Google posted earnings per share excluding certain expenses such as stock compensation of $6.57, up from $6.27 a share in the year-ago period. Analysts expected Google to earn $6.61 a share.<br /><br />Revenue for the quarter was $17.26 billion, up 12% from $15.42 billion. Its payment division PayPal unit, which has seen more growth than the eBay auction unit, is now competing with the likes of Square, Apple, Intuit and others that have new ways for merchants to accept payments, on computers and phones.<br /><br />Analysts tend to be positive on having PayPal be its own entity. "We...believe that PayPal can better innovate and execute as a standalone company," says analyst Doug Anmuth of J.P. Morgan, in a note to investors. <br /><br />The newfound competition on smartphones didn't make Apple the leader in online payments, as expected, and thus, "We believe competition in the payments space will continue to increase," says Anmuth. TV Companies Will Sue VPN Providers “In Days”

<br /><br />A pair of Internet providers who defied TV company demands to switch off their VPN services will be sued in the coming days. CallPlus and Bypass Network Services face legal action from media giants including Sky and TVNZ for allowing their customers to use a VPN to buy geo-restricted content. <br /> <br /><br /><img alt=" TV Companies Will Sue VPN Providers “In Days” " src="http://torrentfreak.com/images/youtube_copyright_sadface-150x150.png" title=" TV Companies Will Sue VPN Providers “In Days” " /><br /> As Internet users demand more freedom online alongside an ability to consume media in a manner of their choosing, tools allowing them to do so are gaining in popularity. <br /><br />Notable has been the rise of <a href="https://torrentfreak.com/anonymous-vpn-service-provider-review-2015-150228/">VPN services</a>, which not only provide an increased level of privacy but also allow users to appear in any country they choose. This opens up a whole new world of content availability – such as better service from Netflix – often at better prices than those offered on home turf. <br /><br />While popular with consumers, this behavior is frowned upon by distribution companies that spend huge sums of money on content licensing deals specific to their regions of coverage. Losing customers to overseas providers isn’t part of their plan and now some are doing something about it. <br /><br />Earlier this month media companies SKY, TVNZ, Lightbox and MediaWorks <a href="http://torrentfreak.com/isp-pulls-vpn-service-after-geo-unblocking-legal-threats-150407/">told several Kiwi ISPs</a> that if they don’t stop providing VPN services to their subscribers, legal trouble would be on the horizon. <br /><br />Within days one of their targets, Unlimited Internet, pulled its VPN service after receiving a letter from a lawfirm claiming breaches of the Copyright Act. However, CallPlus and Bypass Network Services have no intention of caving in to the media giants’ demands. <br /><br />“To receive without warning a grossly threatening legal letter like that from four of the largest companies in New Zealand is not something we are used to,” wrote Bypass CEO Patrick Jordan-Smith in a letter to the media companies. <br /><br />“It smacks of bullying to be honest, especially since your letter doesn’t actually say why you think we are breaching copyright.” <br /><br />Pulling no punches and describing his adversaries as a “gang”, Jordan-Smith likens the threats to those employed by copyright trolls in the United States. <br /><br />“Your letter gets pretty close to the speculative invoicing type letters that lawyers for copyright owners sometimes send in the US ‘pay up or shutdown or else were are going to sue you’! Not fair,” he writes. <br /><br />“We have been providing the Global Mode facility for 2 years. In all that time, none of your Big Media Gang have ever written to us. We assumed they were OK with Global Mode and we continued to spend money innovating the facility and providing innovative NZ ISPs with a service that their customers were telling them they wanted – a service that lets people pay for content rather than pirate it.” <br /><br />The response from Bypass hasn’t been well received by the media companies who now say they will carry through with their threats to sue over breaches of copyright. <br /><br />“Our position has not changed and unless they remove the unlawful service we will begin court action in the next few days,” <a href="http://tvnz.co.nz/business-news/defending-value-content-rights-tvnz-joins-other-media-in-court-action-6292305">says</a> TVNZ chief executive, Kevin Kenrick. <br /><br />“Each of our businesses invests significant sums of money into the rights to screen content sourced legitimately from the creators and owners of that copyrighted material. This is being undermined by the companies who profit from promoting illegitimate ways to access that content.” <br /><br />Claiming that the action is aimed at defending the value of content rights in the digital world, Kenrick says that the legal action is not consumer focused. <br /><br />“This is not about taking action against individual consumers or restricting choice, indeed each of our businesses are investing heavily in more choice so New Zealanders can have legitimate access to the latest TV shows and movies,” the CEO concludes. <br /><br />While the commercial position of the TVNZ chief is understandable, his claim that this legal action isn’t aimed at reducing choice simply doesn’t stack up. In a submission to the government the MPA says that the Marco Civil's current wording on net neutrality deprives courts of the opportunity to order the blocking of 'pirate' sites. <br /><br /><img alt=" Hollywood Seeks Net Neutrality Exceptions To Block Pirates " height="400" src="https://torrentfreak.com/images/throttle.jpg" title=" Hollywood Seeks Net Neutrality Exceptions To Block Pirates " width="400" /> <br /><br />The Brazilian Civil Rights Framework for the Internet (Marco Civil da Internet) is legislation that governs the use of the Internet in Brazil. Under development since 2009, among other key issues the Marco Civil is aimed at protecting online privacy rights and net neutrality principles. <br /><br />The law, which passed last April, was fast-tracked in the wake of revelations from Edward Snowden indicating that the U.S. had been spying on President Dilma Rousseff’s emails and phone calls, those of <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/sep/09/nsa-spying-brazil-oil-petrobras">Brazil’s biggest oil company</a>, and the communications of millions of citizens. <br /><br />After being in place for a year, Brazil is now rolling out the Marco Civil’s <a href="https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/02/marco-civil-devil-detail">secondary legislation</a>, with the Ministry of Justice announcing a public consultation process allowing stakeholders to contribute to the development of the law. <br /><br />One of the organizations getting involved is the Motion Picture Association, the international big brother to the United States’ MPAA. According to the MPA, which counts all the big movie studios among its members, the Marco Civil’s net neutrality provisions present an obstacle to rightsholders seeking to protect their content online. <br /><br />In a submission to Justice Minister José Eduardo Cardozo, the Motion Picture Association expresses concern that the legislation’s current wording is too tight and that exceptions need to be introduced in order to deal with online piracy. <br /><br />“[Our] position is that the regulation should contain cases of exception to the general rule of net neutrality, enabling the judiciary to determine that traffic to a given illegal repository can be blocked,” the MPA writes. <br /><br />“The aforementioned suggestion is based on the premise that an adequate service must be in harmony with the possibility of allowing the judiciary to block access to content that, based on judicial scrutiny, is illegal for any reason, from a case of child pornography and trafficking of illegal substances, to the case of systematic disregard for the consumer and violation of intellectual property rights.” <br /><br />The MPA notes that due to the borderless nature of the Internet anyone can access content from any location. This presents challenges on a national level when undesirable content is made available from other parts of the world, the group says. <br /><br />“For content hosted within a national territory a judge may issue a removal order, or in the case of breaches in the copyright field, the rightsholder can send a takedown notice to the ISP, requesting that the content is rendered unavailable,” the MPA states. <br /><br />“However, when the content is hosted in a foreign nation, the Brazilian court order may [not have jurisdiction] or produce the expected results for months, perhaps years, after the court order has been issued.” <br /><br />According to the MPA there is only one way to remedy this kind of impotence but the way the law is currently worded, the solution remains elusive. <br /><br />“In these cases the Brazilian courts only have only one option: to order service providers to implement technical measures to block Internet traffic when it has been established that services are illegal,” the MPA notes. <br /><br />“Without a clear provision for these techniques, in the midst of regulations, the current wording of the Marco Civil deprives courts of this possibility, leaving them unable to address such threats.” The net neutrality debate is a sensitive one and one that has the potential to seriously affect Hollywood’s interests. Microsoft Takes Pirated Windows NT 4.0 Source Code Offline

The company worked closely with the FBI to track down the source but these efforts were fruitless. <br /><br />Hoping to keep the leak under control, Microsoft also started issuing takedown notices to sites and P2P file-sharers, urging them to stop offering the code. <br /><br />However, like anything that leaks onto the Internet it’s pretty much impossible to remove something for good. Even today, several NT 4.0 copies are still floating around in the dark corners of the web. <br /><br />Up until a few days ago there was even a copy hosted on the popular developer platform <a href="https://github.com/">GitHub</a>. Posted by “njdragonfly” the leaked source code has been available there since 2011. <br /><br />Microsoft initially didn’t spot the infringing copy but it recently took action by sending GitHub a DMCA takedown notice. Microsoft’s takedown notice<br /><br /><img src="https://torrentfreak.com/images/mstd.png" /> <br /><br />“We have received information that the domain listed above, which appears to be on servers under your control, is offering unlicensed copies of, or is engaged in other unauthorized activities relating to, copyrighted works published by Microsoft Corporation,” the company writes <br /><br />The notice proved to be successful. A few hours after its arrival the repository was <a href="https://github.com/njdragonfly/WinNT4/">made inaccessible</a>. Those who try to access it now are redirected to GitHub’s standard takedown page. <br /><br />While it’s understandable that Microsoft doesn’t want its source code out in the open, it’s not as much as a security threat as it was a decade ago. Today, more than 10 years after it was first published, pretty much all exploits have been patched. <br /><br />That said, it’s worth nothing that after all these years Microsoft is trying to contain the leak. But perhaps that’s just for sentimental value.
